The Paterson School District and the Paterson Education Association have been working all summer long to work on various projects, initiatives, and morale building for all employees. Behind the scenes, since the appointment of Acting Superintendent Eileen Shafer, the District and the Union have taken many steps toward rebuilding a positive and collegial relationship.
During the month of July, a large number of employees expressed much concern with the 2017 employee start date. The Union brought these concerns from members to the District’s leadership, and dialogue quickly ensued. Shortly after the parties agreed to the terms, your Union leadership team sent texts, emails, and phone messages to advertise a survey to gauge interest in the proposal.
The results of the study displayed that 1,174 PEA members were in favor of the proposal to amend the employee start date to September 5, 2017, while 353 employees did not approve.
As a result of the overwhelming support of a change to the employee start date, the District and the Union shall agree for all employees to report to work on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. A copy of the agreement between the Union and the District shall be forthcoming as soon as we reopen on August 16th. I have been assured that the District shall be utilizing their all call and email blast system to advertise this change as well.
This agreement between the parties is a genuine show of good faith efforts to improve the morale of all employees. While we recognize that this agreement does not please all who participated, we believe that this open and transparent dialogue is just the first step in improving your experience(s) as an employee.
Please also know that the next scheduled negotiations date between the parties is August 24, 2017. The Union is working extremely hard to achieve a contract for our members.
