What costs $4 million and delays property tax reform until 2007?Answer: A Constitutional Convention (a.k.a. Con Con)Over the next few weeks the New Jersey Legislature will be considering whether there ought to be a Con Con for the purpose of reforming property taxes. Top five reasons to "Can" Con Con! 5. New Jersey residents deserve property tax reform NOW! According to A-5269 (Roberts, Greenstein) and ACR-25 (Roberts), voters would need to approve a Convention in November 2005, and would then need to approve the Convention's recommendations in November 2006. That means higher and higher tax bills until at least 2007! 4. Delegates could veer off into other areas with recommendations to limit local control or eliminate tax protections for those who need it. 3. Recommendations from a Con Con may not be approved by voters. So after two years and $4 million dollars a Con Con may produce no reform at all. 2. A Con Con could be DEADLY for public education and public school employees. ACR-25 would allow the Convention to propose statutory changes. That means they could make recommendations to reduce school funding, eliminate tenure, take away your right to collectively bargain, cut post-retirement medical coverage, and reduce pension benefits. And the number one reason to "Can" Con Con is... 1. It is the Legislature's job to reform taxes! Why should taxpayers pay millions of dollars for a Convention when the Legislature already has the resources and the responsibility to make these policy decisions? Legislators should not be permitted to abdicate their responsibilities just because the job is difficult. YOU can help "Can" Con Con! Send an e-mail to your state legislators.
